Unique Family Stories

Ed

Like any expectant mother would be, I was horrified when a routine 18-week scan of my baby showed up some abnormalities and shocked when a further test revealed that my baby had XYY Syndrome. I felt frightened, angry and confused all at the same time. I knew so little about genetics that I asked how they knew it was a boy!

This was a few years ago now, and the internet had only recently become widely available, but I didn’t have a computer. My doctor didn’t know anything about chromosomal abnormalities, and the few studies that had been done a long time ago were very simplistic and didn’t answer many of my questions. Was I about to give birth to a murdering rapist? What would he look like? Would I be able to cope? Should I have a termination, even though I was already in love with my baby?

I have no idea how I found them, but during my panicky enquiries, I came across Unique. A kind lady with a calm voice put me in touch with some more very helpful people, and it all began to make a bit more sense. I decided to keep my baby, and am now the sometimes proud, always exhausted mother of a beautiful, bouncy 7 yr-old boy. Thank you, Unique.
